Let’s understand Industrial and Systems Engineering!

Let us learn how to think like an industrial engineer. When designing something, industrial engineers must think about the cost of materials and the efficiency of the design.

Prompts to ask students to discuss and introduce the topic:

  • What is industrial engineering in your mind?
  • What is systems engineering in your mind?
  • Where do you think these engineers work? What do they do?
    • They work in ALL kinds of industries and companies
  • What does “optimization” mean to you?
  • What was the industrial revolution?
  • How and when do you budget? Pocket money/allowance? Spend it all on one thing?
  • Example of a remote-controlled car: Who buys all the parts for it? Who makes the budget?
  • Remote control car: uses motors, but which motors to use based on money, requirements, etc.?
  • Have you ever designed something? What did you have to keep in mind while doing so?
    • Time
    • Money
    • Materials
    • Number of people who will help
    • Where you were (what you had available)
    • What else?
  • They work everywhere. They interact with other engineers as well as with managers, finance departments etc.
