Summer Camp LEADer Employment Opportunities

Are you an Illinois student who loves science, engineering, and mathematics? Are you interested in mentoring the next generation of students, inspiring them to pursue careers in STEM? If so, consider becoming a WYSE Summer Camp LEADer. Our Engineering Summer Camps need Lead Counselors, Day and Night Counselors, and Lab Assistants.

Counselors are undergraduate students responsible for small groups of campers who come from across the state, the nation, and the world. Responsibilities include helping campers find their way around campus; leading group activities such as bowling and scavenger hunts; and helping campers make new friends and learn new things. You get to have fun while developing your leadership and collaboration skills.

Each week of camp will have 1-2 Lead Counselors who facilitate trainings, identify and troubleshoot issues, and coordinate the week’s activities and responsibilities. Lead Counselors should have at least one year of engineering summer camp experience and can be either a graduate or undergraduate student.

Lab Assistants (graduate or undergraduate students) will work closely with the camp track coordinators to develop and run lessons for the camps. This role often includes some work in preparation for the camp such as lesson and activity development in collaboration with the camp’s coordinator. Lab assistants will work closely with other counselors to create a positive environment for all campers. This role focuses on the STEM content of the camp and may involve prerequisite requirements as defined by the camp coordinator.

Most of the WYSE Summer Camps are overnight camps (except for Mid-GLAM), each running from Sunday afternoon through Saturday morning. Counselors and lab assistants work in week-long schedules. Residence hall rooms and meal passes are provided for Overnight and Lead counselors. You will have the flexibility to choose whether you would like to work all six weeks or just for particular camps. Wages are hourly, earning up to $650 each week of camp. Visit the WYSE Summer Camps page to learn more about the summer camps offered.
